X to Collect Biometric and Employment Data from Users

X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, announced that it may collect biometric and employment information from its users based on their consent.

The new privacy policy will go into effect on September 29, 2023, Elon Musk said. The policy states that X may collect users' biometric identifiers and biometric information, such as faceprints and voiceprints, for safety, security, and identification purposes. The policy also states that X may collect users' employment information, such as current or past employers, job titles, roles, and responsibilities, to recommend potential jobs, share with employers, and show relevant advertising.

The company said collecting biometric and employment data will be optional and require users' explicit consent. Users can review, modify, or delete their data at any time. The change comes as owner Elon Musk plans to offer video and audio calls on X and turn it into an "everything app" similar to WeChat.

However, the change also faces scrutiny from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which has a pending settlement with X over previous privacy violations. The FTC accused X of misleading users about their data being used and shared with third parties.

Some users have expressed concern over the new privacy policy and the potential misuse of their data. Others have welcomed the new features and the convenience of having an "everything" app.
